Revenue architecture

A revenue architecture framework you can apply in a week.

Six layers, in the order they have to be fixed. Skipping down the list is how rebuilds fail.

What each one is for

One, the data modelOne record per company, objects that match how you sell, ownership on every record.Everything inherits this
Two, lifecycleStages with conditions that are true or false, shared across all three teams.Needs sign off, not a memo
Three, pricing and packagingUnits that match the value customers actually take.Changes revenue timing
Four, renewal mechanicsDates, owners, baselines, and health on real usage.Where retention is won
Five, compensationWhat the plan pays for against what the motion needs.Slowest to change
Six, reporting definitionsOne per metric, with an owner and a review date.Do this last, not first

Questions

What is a revenue architecture framework?

A dependency order for rebuilding how a company represents revenue: data model first, then lifecycle, pricing, renewal mechanics, compensation, and reporting definitions last.

Why does the order matter?

Each layer inherits the problems of the one below. Fixing lifecycle on a duplicated data model means doing it twice, and rebuilding reporting first locks in the existing confusion.

How long does it take?

The design work is a week of reading and a workshop. The migration and the retraining take longer, and the governance is permanent.

Do we need to do all six?

No. Most companies have two or three layers that are actually broken. The point of the order is to find out which, rather than fixing whatever is most visible.
