Comparison

Fractional RevOps against an agency retainer

Both bill monthly. One is a person who knows your system, the other is a team assigned to your account.

The short answerAn agency gives you bench depth, process and cover when somebody leaves. A fractional operator gives you continuity, context and a much lower price. Agency retainers in this market commonly run $3,000 to $27,000 a month, with productised RevOps-as-a-service starting near $9,850 a month for ten hours a week. Sapwood is $2,000 a month for up to fifteen hours a week with Kaypo included.

What you actually get from each

An agency staffs your account from whoever has capacity that quarter. That means holiday cover, several specialisms, and a project manager between you and the person doing the work. It also means context lives in a handover document rather than in someone's head.

A fractional operator is one person. No cover, no bench, and a hard ceiling on hours. In exchange, the person who read your CRM is the person who rebuilds it and the person who answers in month seven.

Where agencies are genuinely better

Large multi-system migrations, anything needing several specialists at once, and situations where procurement requires a company with insurance, SOC 2 and a contract they recognise. If you need four skill sets in parallel, one person cannot do it.

Where fractional wins

Under about 250 people, where the work is deep rather than wide, and where the real problem is that nobody owns the system rather than that nobody has capacity. Continuity matters more than bench depth when the job is judgment.

Questions

Is fractional RevOps cheaper than an agency?

Materially, yes. Published agency retainers in this market run from $3,000 to $27,000 a month. Sapwood is $2,000 a month with Kaypo included.

What do I lose by not hiring an agency?

Cover and bench depth. One operator cannot cover holiday, cannot run four workstreams at once, and has a fixed number of hours.

Do agencies do better work?

Not inherently. They do broader work. On a single system with deep context, continuity usually beats headcount.

Can I start fractional and move to an agency later?

Yes, and the diagnostic report makes that easier, because it scopes the work in writing before anyone quotes it.

Want to talk it through?

Leave an email and I will reply myself, usually the same day. No sequence, no newsletter, and no calendar link unless you ask for one.

One reply from a person. Nothing else.

Got it. You will hear from hello@sapwood.io.
